A express\u00e3o surgiu porque muitas delas chegavam ao Brasil recheadas de dinheiro falso. No ciclo do ouro, os contrabandistas costumavam enganar a fiscaliza\u00e7\u00e3o recheando os santos ocos com ouro em p\u00f3. No auge da minera\u00e7\u00e3o, os impostos cobrados pelo rei de Portugal eram muito elevados. Para escapar do tributo, os donos de minas e os grandes senhores de terras da col\u00f4nia colocavam parte de suas riquezas no interior de imagens ocas de santos. Algumas, normalmente as maiores, eram enviadas a parentes de outras prov\u00edncias e at\u00e9 de Portugal como se fossem presentes.
